"After the last sky" festival

Where will we go after the last frontier? Where will the birds fly after the last sky?" – Mahmoud Darwish, 2003

After the Last Sky is the first interdisciplinary and international festival in Germany to showcase the multifaceted practice of contemporary Palestinian artists. Through theater, film, performance, panels, literature, spoken word, staged readings, music, and dance, the festival explores the artistic diversity of Palestinian narratives and visions while simultaneously building bridges to global contexts of colonization, displacement, resistance, and empowerment.

After the Last Sky is a continuation of the curatorial practice of Ballhaus Naunynstraße, which is known for providing access to post-migrant and post-colonial realities. The festival inspires new perspectives on how Palestinian realities can be discussed in Germany today. The artistic interventions create spaces of visibility and encourage the reconstruction of the past, the rethinking of the present, and the collective imagination of a possible future.

During the four-week festival, which opens the season at Ballhaus Naunynstraße on September 9, the musicians Sanaa Moussa, Kamilya Jubran, Jowan Safadi, Katibeh5, the artists Hani Zurob, Larissa Sansour, Kamal Al Jafari, Yazan Khalili, Jumana Manna and Steve Sabella, as well as the performers of the Sareyyet dance ensemble from Ramallah and the writer Adania Shibli - among many other artistic contributions - will participate.

A performance by Maiada Aboud as part of the festival

Performance art is my platform for the rebellion against traditional perceptions of the ‘woman’ in the Arab world (Maiada Aboud) In Maiada Aboud’s one-hour piece Stigmata II, her body becomes the performative site of the scapegoat’s crucifixion and stoning. Using the language of her body, she challenges patriarchy. Her works revolve around the interdependencies between social and political structures and their impact on the individual. With endurance and performance art, Aboud contributes to addressing the margins and visibilities of absence.

Curated by Pary El-Qalqili, Anna-Esther Younes, Nadia J. Kabalan (Exhibition)
